Jesus Freak is the fourth studio album by the band DC Talk and was released on November 21, 1995 on ForeFront Records. The style was a marked departure from the group's previous releases, incorporating a heavier rock sound and elements of grunge that was popular at the time. The album was released to both critical and commercial acclaim. It peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 and six of the album's seven singles reached number one across various Christian radio formats. It won the 1997 Grammy. But this was only the beginning. Three years later, Toby, Mike, and Kevin are back again, from the House of Insomnia their studio in Franklin Tennessee with Jesus Freak. A funky guitar riff and raw drum intro on So Help Me God opens Jesus Freak. The song asks God to be with us and for Him to be our source of hope, and not the world. After building a dedicated following with three albums of Christian hip-hop, dc Talk make a play for crossover success with Jesus Freak. As the title indicates, the group members haven't abandoned their religious base. What they have done is expand their musical palette. Retaining a solid hip-hop foundation, the trio add elements of soul, psychedelic rock, and pop, making Jesus Freak their most ambitious album to date. Dc Talk did something very important for the music industry they brought something other than worship to the Christian industry. It brought a rock feel to it that even the metal heads of the industry can appreciate, and it's an excellent album. The Good: Their is a lot of good in this album, as above I mentioned that it was one of the most influential alternative Christian albums of all time.
