Most of the first disc is devoted to an October 26, 1969 concert given at La Maison de la Radio's Studio 104, where Grant Green was supported by bassist Larry Ridley, drummer Don Lamond, and, on I Wish You Love, guitarist Barney Kessel, while the second part of Funk in France combines four highlights from two July 1970 appearances at the Antibes. For the experienced Grant Green fan, lots to dig into here. These are rough live recordings (especially the 2nd and 3rd LPs) but the fire is there and gives you a completely different dimension compared to Green's studio recordings. If you're new to Green, there are at least half a dozen or more studio albums you should own before thinking about getting this one.As much as I enjoy this release, I'm probably going to stick to CD editions of Resonance releases going forward. Although some of their vinyl releases are stunning, there is only so much that can be done (BG Mastering and RTI pressing) with some of these archival live performances to clean up the sound. Case in point - records 2 and 3 in this 3xLP set. I just don't think the pricing premium of vinyl over CD is justified with stuff like this.

Ok, yes i'm a fan, and so are a lot of other people i know...i was blown away by "Slick!" (see review) and those other people i know?...uh, not so much...so here we go again with another totally unique and awesome artifact from the unstoppable force of nature otherwise known as Grant Green...Paris sides A and B, nice...Grant plays chords, and very well!...and plays single lines in his own inimitable, relaxed, and soulful style...treat yourself to the rare and priceless footage in the YouTube video.But the Antibes Jazz Fest material...sides C, D, E and F are actually at the heart of the matter here."Hurt So Bad" (Side D) sums up everything we need to know about July18 & 20, 1970...and this is why...First, there's Clarence Palmer's organ...he (mostly) channels Larry Young...so great to hear the expansive and ambiguous chords and baselines presented here, and the tone of the instrument is stunning, earthy and gritty, imho a perfect blueprint for an ideal B-3 sound...then there's Claude Bartee...he digs, overblows, and delves into enough searching "Trane-isms" to keep this from ever bogging down into another regular "bbq" soul jazz date.Billy Wilson provides tasty support and keeps everything wrapped up tight, and Grant? well...Uh huh!...tone, time, phrasing, feel, lyricism...everything we would expect from the maestro, and a bit more...casually stepping out of his regular bag of hot licks from time to time to incorporate some wonderful, purely improvised moments that sound fresh and unexpected...remember Duane? at the Fillmore East? oh yeah!...well imho Grant and his crack band inhabit the same ground here...the ocean of B-3, sent from heaven electric guitar tones, all on display in the service of spiritually pure "creativity."Yes, Grant isn't soloing every split second of every track, and the recording isn't perfect (but is extremely good and has that real, raw, presence of a good boot)...but he lovingly gives his group time and space to add to the overall sound and direction of the music...and what music it is!

Wow! I must be crazy. I might agree with your comments, but I find the recording to be awful. I get it... live from a jazz festival, not in the studio, but I can't make out what Palmer is doing, especially on the first date of Upshot. Im so bummed about the purchase.

In the UK I think it was about £55. Pretty expensive but it's a lovely package. Sound quality is actually very good. Only an audiophile snob would pick fault with it.

I paid $67 at an Independent Record Store on RSD 2018. I imagine this was pretty typically of the retail price. Resonance Record releases, in general, hold their value really well, or in some cases, the value skyrockets.
