The album showcases the band's funk-oriented musical style through Dave Navarro's heavy guitar riffs and the distinctive singing style of vocalist Perry Farrell, and was one of the leading albums of the funk metal genre that made its breakthrough in the late 80's and 90's. According to the Sept 10, 1988 issue of Billboard, Steve Marmaduke, then VP of purchasing for Amarillo, TX based Western Merchandisers was quoted as saying: Its the second-most repulsive cover Ive ever. Although Jane's Addiction's 1987 self-titled debut was an intriguing release few alternative bands at the time had the courage to mix modern rock, prog rock, and heavy metal together, it paled in comparison to their now classic major-label release one year later, Nothing's Shocking. About Nothings Shocking. More than a shot across the bow to the tired cliche of 80s synthetic pop music where raw, loud guitars had been banished, this was more like a nuclear missile across the bow. It was heavy music with heavy lyrics, an epic masterpiece bested only by their next album Ritual De Lo Habitual.
